What is COSHH and why does it apply to grounds maintenance?
COSHH — the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations — requires UK employers to assess and control the risks from hazardous substances used or produced at work. For a golf course or sports facility, that typically includes fuels, oils, pesticides, fertilisers, cleaning chemicals and dust generated by maintenance work — substances most grounds teams handle routinely.
What should a COSHH assessment cover?
A COSHH assessment generally identifies the hazardous substances in use, assesses who might be exposed and how, sets out the controls and PPE needed to reduce that risk, and covers safe storage, handling and emergency procedures.
